SALEM, Oregon — Today, Oregon Right to Life is proud to join in celebrating the second annual Oregon Adoption Day. The celebration was established last year by a life-affirming measure advanced by Representative Lucetta Elmer (R-McMinnville), who had been adopted as a baby.

Representative Elmer introduced HB 2019 during the 2025 legislative session to establish August 25 as Oregon Adoption Day. The measure received unanimous, bipartisan approval from both chambers of the legislature.

“The day this bill recognizes is not just a date on a calendar: It’s my day,” Rep. Elmer said on the House Floor last year. “The day that forever changed my story, gave me a future, and placed me in the arms of a mother who chose me as her own, and ultimately led me here today, talking to you.”

Oregon Right to Life Executive Director Lois Anderson said the establishment of Oregon Adoption Day is a “remarkable achievement” for Rep. Elmer, as well as for families across Oregon with connections to adoption.

“Today, we are honored to celebrate Oregon Adoption Day for the second time,” Anderson said. “In setting aside a day to celebrate adoption, Rep. Elmer made a profound pro-life statement that adoption can be a beautiful blessing to parents and children. This special day showcases the generosity, resilience, and love exemplified by adoptive families.”

“August 25th also serves as a reminder never to give up on advancing life-affirming bills in our Oregon legislature,” she added. “Securing unanimous, bipartisan support for Oregon Adoption Day was such a remarkable achievement. I sincerely hope it sets a precedent for the passage of many such bills in the future.”
