We Welcome All Pro-Lifers

Sharolyn Smith

Since the election of Donald Trump, pundits and analysts have been busy. Whatever their persuasion, they agree on one thing: our nation is divided. The polarization seems greater than ever before. The astonishing Republican victory — seizing the House, the Senate, and the White House — encourages pro-lifers, and it should. But politics are cyclical.

Conservative positions, including the right to life, will be scrutinized and vilified more than ever over the next four years. Planned Parenthood has already received more than 50,000 donations in the name of pro-life Vice President-Elect Mike Pence. There has been a marked increase in media coverage of abortion rights issues. Young people on both sides of the issue are energized.

Anti-Trump protests in Portland following the election included high school students. Yet, polling consistently shows young people are increasingly pro-life. I have no doubt the youth vote will turn out in force in 2020.

What will the fight for the unborn look like in four years? We can hope and pray for legislative and judicial changes that will make a difference. But, there is one difference we can make and that is to make the pro-life tent as big as possible.

At Oregon Right to Life, we take no position on non-life issues. We are not advancing social conservatism. We are not spreading a religion. We are seeking to address the inalienable civil rights of a group of human beings whose very lives are at stake.

In Oregon, abortion is legal until birth. It is legal to murder full-term, viable babies as long as they have not exited their mother. This is a horror that many Americans would oppose, even if they have nothing else in common with the average pro-life activist.

If the pro-life tent is kept open to all — including the non-religious, alternative, feminists, and even pro-life progressives (yes, they exist), we have the best chance at lasting victories for the pre-born. And to the precious, defenseless baby at risk of chemical or surgical abortion, that is the one issue that matters most.

  1. I recently moved to Portland, Oregon and support the right to life . I’m the single mother of two children and regret to say I’ve had two abortions I’m so sorry that I did. If you can direct me on where I can be of help to advacate for the protection of life, marches or churches that support life that would be great. I have a daughter I’d like to be an example to.. Thanks. Kathryn Larrabee

  2. You are very wise to be a big-tent pro-life organization. As a pro-life Democrat, it’s very encouraging. Too many people think Democrat = = pro-choice/pro-death and Republican = pro-life/anti-woman.
