I am writing as a pro-life Oregonian to ask for your strong opposition to HB 4088.
This dangerous bill would provide special protection for abortion providers and distributors of dangerous abortion pills, shielding them from prosecution by law enforcement agencies of the federal government or other states.
HB 4088 opens the door for crimes being missed, ignored, or otherwise unpunished. The 2023 case in which an Idaho man and his mother were prosecuted in Idaho for kidnapping after taking the man’s 15-year-old girlfriend across state lines to obtain an abortion (even though she stated she wanted the baby) is a perfect example. It is critical in such cases for Oregon and Idaho law enforcement, for example, to be able to fully cooperate in the administration of justice.
We also cannot ignore the devastating cases in which women and babies have been victimized by doctors committing gross medical malpractice and other crimes. The 2013 prosecution of infamous abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell shows that horrific abuses can and do occur. Our law enforcement and courts must be fully equipped to prosecute or assist in the prosecution of bad actors in partnership with the federal government and other states.
Moreover, at a time when more than one in ten women experiences a serious adverse reaction from taking the abortion pill, it is clear that we need greater oversight, not less.
Singling out the abortion industry for special protection puts the interests of the abortion lobby above the wellbeing of Oregon’s moms and families. That is unacceptable, reckless, and places some of the most vulnerable Oregonians at grave risk.
Please oppose HB 4088.
