Salem, Ore. — Pro-life advocates from across Oregon gathered outside the State Capitol in Salem on Saturday for the annual Oregon March for Life.
This year’s March featured speeches by Portland Archbishop Alexander Sample, abortion survivor Amy Miles, and Road 2 Hope program manager Alayna Garcia, among others.
“The March for Life is a powerful coming-together that always renews my sense of optimism for ending abortion and building a culture of life in our state,” Oregon Right to Life executive director Lois Anderson said. “It is deeply inspiring and encouraging to gather with so many people committed to compassionately advocating for mothers and their babies and calling on Oregon lawmakers to protect unborn lives.”
Pro-life advocates of all ages and backgrounds attended the March, advocating for a renewal of protections for Oregon’s most vulnerable. The program emphasized the importance of empathetic and compassionate dialogue, as well as providing encouragement and tangible support to women facing unsupported pregnancies or healing to those who have had abortions in our communities.
This year’s event also featured a diaper drive with the help of EveryLife, a pro-life diaper company. Generous supporters contributed to purchase nearly 200 boxes of baby diapers in the weeks ahead of the March for Life, in addition to the packages brought by supporters directly. In total, over 30,000 diapers were donated, far exceeding the original 10,000 diaper goal. The diapers will be distributed to pro-life pregnancy resource centers statewide to help moms and families in need.
“The generosity and advocacy of pro-life Oregonians is truly amazing, as shown by the incredible results of this year’s diaper drive,” Anderson said. “I’m so grateful for everyone who took part in the diaper drive and all those who chose to spend their Saturday advocating for the most vulnerable. Real change happens when we make our voices heard.”
This is the second year the event was held in May, the month that Oregon legalized abortion statewide in 1969. In previous years, the Oregon March for Life took place in January to mark the anniversary of Roe v. Wade (1973) prior to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 reversal of Roe.
Abortion is currently legal until the moment of birth in Oregon, with no protections for unborn human beings or explicit safeguards for newborns who survive abortion attempts. Taxpayer dollars currently pay for more than half of all abortions performed in the state. Oregon Right to Life is dedicated to promoting a culture of life in Oregon through grassroots action, political advocacy, and educational outreach. Oregon Right to Life invites pro-life advocates to continue their pro-life advocacy through Celebrate Life Month in June.
