Four bills have been introduced in the 2019 Oregon Legislature that expand assisted suicide. These bills create dangerous loopholes that will put vulnerable people at risk of elder abuse. The loopholes will allow these Oregonians to be manipulated and coerced into ending their lives.
Loophole 1 (House Bills 2217 2232, 2903) Expands the ways the deadly prescription can be administered. It creates a path for a bad actor to end a vulnerable person’s life and make it look like assisted suicide.
Loophole 2 (Senate Bill 579) Creates a “fast track” request scheme for those who are believed to be at the very end of life. It bypasses what protections exist in the current law. This loophole will put the most vulnerable people at risk of being coerced into ending their lives.
Loophole 3 (HB 2232, HB 2903) Allows people who are not terminally ill to end their lives by massively broadening the definition of terminal illness. Currently, people who receive a terminal diagnosis can only begin the process to end their life if a physician determines they are within 6 months of dying. HB 2232 and HB 2903 remove the 6-month requirement completely and broaden the definition of terminal disease to include people years away from dying, even if there is a known treatment.
