Remembering Marilyn Hassler, Longtime Douglas County Advocate

A longtime pro-life advocate in Roseburg passed away this spring. Marilyn Hassler, an elderly California native, was a stalwart board member of Douglas County Right to Life for multiple decades. She passed away after an apparent heart attack on May 13, 2022.

Linda Middlekauff, the current group chapter chair, met Hassler in 1994. Hassler quickly became involved in events like Life Chain, county fair booths, board meetings, phone call recruiting and Walk for Life. She and Jim, her husband, proved themselves to be dependable and hard-working.

“She never knew a stranger and was the most sociable person!” Middlekauff remembers. “Marilyn was so kind to everyone and truly shined the light of God’s love on all. People were naturally drawn to her!”

Hassler was a lover of the arts, often attending musicals, plays and art shows with a friend in Roseburg. “Her greatest contributions to our chapter were her enthusiasm and her dependability,” Middlekauff says. “We could always count on Marilyn to be there and to help!”

Memorial contributions can be made to Oregon Right to Life at ortl.org/donate-ortl. Please check the “Dedicate my donation in honor or in memory of someone” box to include Hassler’s name.

“We were all so deeply saddened but so very grateful to have known her,” Middlekauff says. “For me personally, our meetings are not the same without her. She’s been greatly missed.”
