RNC 2016 and the Pro-Life Issue

National party conventions are always good political theater. The Republican convention did not disappoint. There are still powerful players who want to see two pro-abortion parties, but for now the GOP remains pro-life. This is thanks to pro-lifers across the country who sent delegates to Cleveland with the goal of preserving and strengthening the pro-life planks of the party platform.

A party platform is “a document stating the aims and principles of a political party.” The 2016 Republican platform is the most pro-life GOP platform adopted in its history. It stands in stark contrast to the 2016 Democratic platform (which has pro-life Democrats upset). The Democratic platform calls for the repeal of the Hyde amendment. For 40 years, this amendment has prevented federal funds from paying directly for abortions through programs such as Medicaid.

The Republican platform expresses clear support for pro-life principles. It also contained as an extensive list of desired pro-life legislation, including a "<yoastmarkban on public funds to Planned Parenthood. It called for federal legislation making it a “crime to acquire, transfer, or sell fetal tissues from elective abortions.” The platform also celebrates the contributions of millions of Americans who care for women and babies in life-affirming ways including counseling, medical services, adoption counseling in addition to basic needs like housing and nutrition. We encourage you to become familiar with both documents. Take every opportunity to ask candidates in your area whether they agree or disagree with the platform.

Before the convention, the choice of Governor Mike Pence as the Vice Presidential candidate put one of the nation’s most dedicated pro-life leaders on the ticket. NPR reported: “As a member of the House, Pence introduced legislation to defund Planned Parenthood and other clinics that perform abortion beginning in 2007, long before cutting off Planned Parenthood became a GOP rallying cry last year. He also supported bills that would require women to get an ultrasound before an abortion.”

It was disappointing that no convention speaker gave more than a passing reference to life issue or used the opportunity to lay out the positive vision of life expressed in the Republican platform at the podium. That is all the more reason for each of us pro-life advocates to be speaking out at every opportunity.

  1. I can’t stand either candidate, but will vote for Trump based on Pro Life stance. Unfortunately, these are the only two people in this whole country we could come up with, really pathetic.
Equally unfortunate that Hillary Clinton will probably be our next president. Donald Trump can not rally enough important supporters, as shown at RNC, or use a filter on that big mouth to sound…..sound.

  2. I am concerned that Pence is merely serving Trump as a show-piece to conciliate pro-lifers and try to overcome their reservations about Trump after his ignorant and distubing comments about Planned Parenthood “doing good things for women’s health.” Based on what I’ve seen of Trump’s character, I doubt Pence will have much influence on Trump’s decision and policymaking.

  3. Yes … I was really disappointed that Trump did not throw us even a tiny bone during his speech. There has been so much bad press around PP for the last year, I would have thought that Republicans would have tried to capitalize on that a little more.

  4. As it stands right now, this country is on its way to Hell. By electing Hillary it would be running faster and picking up speed! There is nothing we can do to stop the turmoil we are going to have! Read your Bible. It is all spelled out. It is going to happen! We as Christians will not have to see the worst but we will see much. BUT if we have faith in God, we will be given strength to endure until Christ returns! These bad times are going to happen. If we as a Nation forget about God and THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, disregard everything that the Holy Bible (greatest history book ever)containing all of God’s COMMANDMENTS and everything that has happened to people who obeyed God or NOT, from the beginning of time! Time after time after time after time the SAME THING HAPPENS TO PEOPLE WHO DISREGARD GOD.
    I don’t like hillary.
    I don’t like Trump.
    I think Hillary is worse.
I think that they are both headed to Hell, unless they do an About Face!
God will judge them, not me.
All I can and will do is pray for them.

  5. I did not hear Donald Trump address this issue one time in his acceptance speech, or in any other way. Are you satisified with his resolve?

  6. Thank You. As someone who has been told that we must use gender selection in order to ensure that a visual impairment must not be passed down, thank God for this organization. I would’nt wish what I have on anybody. You can’t reject a child on gerder. Thank you for your stand aganest gender selection.
